NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)

(Self-Financing Unit)

(Established by NSS Regional Centre, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India)

Introduction

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate & Post Graduate at HEI and University level of India to take part in various government led community service activities & programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. Inception of popularly known as NSS, was launched in Gandhi ji’s Centenary year in 1969. The number of student’s volunteer strength has increased in the Institution to take part in various community service programmes.

NSS BADGE – Proud to serve the Nation

The NSS symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The NSS badge is based on signifying the progressive movement in life across time and space, cycle of life, having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of a day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock. The symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change, transformation and upliftment. The NSS youth volunteers who opt to serve the nation through the NSS led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility towards helping needy.

NSS DAY

NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities.

NSS Symbol

The design of the symbol for the National Service Scheme (NSS)

  1. The Konark wheel: in the NSS badge as appearing is a simplified form of the Giant ‘Rath’ Wheel of the world-famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa. The symbol of the, Sun-chariot, the Konark wheel primarily depicts movement, the giant wheels of the Sun Temple having 8 bars in the wheel represents and signifies the 24 hours of the day, The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space.
  2. The Red colour in the badge indicates that the volunteer is full of young blood that is lively, active and full of energy high signifies the spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers.
  3. The Blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

NSS anthem

During Silver Jubilee Year the NSS theme song has been composed. All NSS volunteers are expected to learn the theme song and sing the song during NSS programmes and celebrations. The theme song is available.
