Equal Opportunity Cell

INTRODUCTION

The main problems faced by people viewed as disabled, or with disabilities, or of minority status, stems from disabling environmental, economic and cultural barriers. Disability and minority are therefore equal rights issues on a par with other forms of unjustifiable discrimination and prejudices. The Equal Opportunity Cell was set up by the Institute to address these and other urgent issues concerning SC, ST, OBC and persons with disabilities (PwD) on 27th June, 2006.

The Institute’s Equal Opportunity Cell which looks after the interests of the students with special needs. Special support is provided to slow learners and those who need additional help through a variety of means such as remedial and extra classes. The Institute has constructed ramps, railings, accessible washrooms and Braille-enabled sign boards for differently abled persons. Funding is given by UGC to run the Cell (EOC). EOC follows the UGC Guidelines

AIMS

The Equal Opportunity Cell stands for social justice and works towards creating avenues for students with disability to fulfil their potential and sensitize members of the institution to the needs of students with disability and underprivileged sections of the society

Scope

The scope of EOC is to create an atmosphere of equality with special privileges to the least advantaged groups of the institution. The society also focuses on the academic discourses to sensitize the institute community. Extra-curricular activities are conducted to bring knowledge and awareness among the student community

Objectives

  1. To be the torchbearer of creating awareness of the concept of equal opportunities to one and all; irrespective of gender, ability, socio-economic background, caste, religion or language; on the lines of the UGC guidelines
  2. To oversee the effective implementation of policies and programmes for disadvantaged groups, to provide guidance and counseling concerning academic, financial, social and other matters and to enhance the diversity within the campus.
  3. EOC stands as a platform to create avenues for people with benchmark disabilities and give them a space to feel like they belong. Through its various programmers conducted in association with Cultural Club, EBSB Club, Gender Champion Club, Happiness Club and NSS Club seeks to generate awareness for the same. Equal Opportunity Cell, of the institute sensitizes and creates awareness through various competition among students with benchmark disabilities on the theme “Cultures of India”
  4. EOC also organized a webinar on ‘Stress, Mental Health and Social Inclusion’. The guest speaker for the event was a Psychologist and Dr. H.L.N Murty. The webinar created awareness about Stress, Mental Health and the importance of Social Inclusion among young adults.

THE EOC ENSURES

  1. Affirmative actions concerning SC, ST and OBC
  2. A barrier free access to all, Departments, Library and Offices of the Institute.
  3. No discrimination on grounds of disability or minority status
  4. Short term courses for imparting employable skills for the disabled and for raising awareness about disability
  5. Reaching out to like-minded institutes and organizations dealing with similar issues “Ashtavakra Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences And Research”.
